The Roku Digital Media Player is one of the easiest, cheapest ways to add internet video to an existing TV.  The variety of connectivity options virtually guarantees it will connect to your TV and the options for connecting to the internet include both wired and wireless.  HD video and audio is now supported as well, meaning you won’t be limited to watching dramas and comedies on your big screen TV.  Roku also supports some of our favorite online video sources, including Netflix Watch Now and Amazon on Demand, so you have over 50,000+ TV shows and Movies available now.  It would be nice to see some of the free services like Hulu or the television networks on the box as well.  According to Roku, they intend to roll out more supported ‘channels’ of online video that will be available through automatic updates to existing customers as well.  Which is good, since we at Internet2TV.com want to watch whatever we want whenever we want!

The remote and user interface work pretty well for picking what videos you want to watch, but you still need to manage your Netflix queue and your Amazon video library using your computer.  The video below has a great overview from the folks at CNet on how easy it is to get everything set up on the Roku box to watch your Amazon and Netflix videos on your television.  Once you select the videos you might want to watch on either service, it’s easy to pick the one you want using the Roku player.

According to Roku, you will want to have at least a 1.2 Mbit/second internet connection to enjoy watching online video and up to 5 Mbits/sec to insure the best quality HD experience.

The Pros:

  • Huge amount of content available via Netflix and Amazon partnerships
  • Supports HD video and audio
  • Great connectivity options to your TV -  HDMI, Component, Composite, S-Video and both optical and stereo Audio connectors.
  • Good networking connectivity - built in Ethernet and 802.11 b/g Wireless connectvity make it cheap and easy to connect the Roku player to your internet connection
  • NEC Protocol supports many universal remotes

The Cons (not many):

  • Not to be nit-picky, but we think that the 802.11 n standard for wireless is better for watching HD video in long term.  It doesn’t seem to be an issue, but we’d like to see that in the next version.
  • Tens of thousands of video choices are more than enough, but we are looking forward to seeing what else becomes available on the Roku player in the future.

Overall, Roku provides one of the best bang for the buck digital media players on the market.  If you’re looking to get rid of your movie channel monthly fee from your cable provider or just find a cheaper, easier wayto watch to watch your favorite shows, the Roku box is one of your best choices on the market today.
